Welch was Paul Robeson's leading lady in the thirties, and may be best known for her somewhat later performance of "Stormy Weather" in Derek Jormon's "The Tempest" (1979). She continues to charm audiences with her unique blend of musical skill and sophistication, now enriched by a wealth of experience and the satisfaction of having overcome a crippling illness.
